Coffee talks and reflections [Mar. 9th, 2005|10:24 am]
[Current Mood | contemplative]

Yesterday evening started off as a small get together comprising the Blahs, Van, Ash, Ron, Japna and myself. The conversations were interesting and after meandering for a while, settled on the India vs China issue with particular reference to young people in both countries, the mind set they share and who would be more geared toward a more progressive future.

My view that Indians in general and young people in particular being more equipped to manage globalisation and change rather than Chinese was met with strong disagreement. I was accused of adding a racial slant to the situation and the general view was that the Chinese would be on par if not way ahead of young India.

I've asked myself this question (and mused about it previously on these pages) if, when I would berate several realities in China, I was being racist. I reached a conclusion then that I was telling things the way they are without any bias of the country in itself. I said then that what bothered me wasn't the Chinese culture or peoples' mindset but the environment in which Chinese are brought up. This I said, further went on to create a blinkered vision of the world and of China's and Chinese peoples' role in the world.

Ironically enough, Blah made a comment saying my view was similar to the Nazi concept of Aryans and the superior race theory. I say ironically because in many ways, the Chinese view the world and their place in it with a similar outlook. Now I have to clarify here: by Chinese I dont mean the average Chinese person you would meet but the Chinese government is increasingly viewing the world with the sole intention of establishing China as a "superpower", to compete with all existing benchmarks and better them in an emphatic fashion. Whether it is Shanghai as Asia's financial capital, Nanchang as an IT powerhouse, Tibet as a tourist destination (sadly soon to be lacking in Tibetans! but that's a different story) or turning Shenzhen and Guangzhou into the world's supermarket for hardware, white goods and textiles. I sensed then and I believe now that all the policies, the trends point to China wanting to better existing benchmarks and establish their own as the new benchmarks for the world. This can clearly be seen in other areas too like sports. The sheer volume of funds and manic efforts that are going into making China the world's sporting giant is staggering.

Now, the most obvious arguement here would be " So what's wrong with all of this? China wants to achieve success and is doing whatever it has to, to ensure it happens" My contention is simple: Amicability and amity aren't China's strenghts. Indeed, they are China's biggest stumbling blocks. The attitude of wanting to establish "supremacy" in all fields in itself sends a negative signal to most peoples and nations. A nation striving towards development is one thing, but a nation wanting to prove a point is another thing entirely. I think China is doing the latter.

But coming back to the original point: Young India Vs Young China - who would come out on top?

Like everyone else last evening, I wanted to be emphatic and say "of course its going to be China" but what held me back (and what created the huge debate that ensued) was what I have experienced. I am still of the belief that until young people in China are able to overcome the restrictions placed on them in terms of information, freedom of movement and overall, viewing the world as an easily accessible and familiar place, there might still be a chance that young India might just sneak through.

On the other hand, if some of form of liberal governing structure comes into place in China soon, its a no contest. So, about the debate last night, it was a case of opposing points of view. I have to admit the odds are highly stacked against young India emerging as a vibrant force. I have no doubt that young China will emerge as one in due course of time. However, to conclude, if young India does come out of its complacency, the world will be its playground.

It would be interesting to somehow revisit this page in 15 years.

Mark Knopfler Live! [Mar. 8th, 2005|08:46 pm]
I managed to squeeze my way right up front against the railing at the Mark Knopfler concert on Monday and was about 10 feet away from the stage. Fantastic. He played all his great songs except for heavy fuel and tunnel of love.
An absolute treat.

Volunteer work... [Mar. 7th, 2005|02:27 pm]
[Current Mood |awake]
[Current Music |Stuck in the middle with you - stealers wheelers]

I spent the better part of my sunday visiting a school outside Bangalore called "Ananya". The school is special in the sense that the students who study there are all children who, if not in Ananya, would not be in any school at all. They would probably be child labourers or would have been forced to earn their living in another way.

All the kids (numbering about 40) are between the ages of 5 to 14. They all have parents who earn less than a dollar a day or just about a dollar a day.

The school is a 2 acre plot with bunks, tents, a kitchen, a library, vegetable garden and space for more creative pursuits like drawing, painting and games. The kids are of course given 3 meals a day and are taught to read, write and even pen their own stories, all in English. They are taught to draw, paint, play hockey, ping pong, cricket and are even taken to a computer literacy class.

All this is done through a core group of volunteers who have knowledge or expertise in these fields. I met with one of the founders of Ananya to find out how I could volunteer my time and try to make a difference to these kids' lives. I also happened to meet with Vishal who is the founder of Dream a Dream (http://www.dreamadream.org)

Vishal is one of  the few people from AIESEC who is actually walking the talk as far as impacting society goes.

I plan to first volunteer time with Ananya and Dream a Dream and slowly try to build around my initial idea of forming a platform for young people to make a difference.

Now the only juggling act is if I do decide to enroll in Spanish classes, commuting around in time will be a major concern.

But then again, nothing's gained without sacrifice.

An objective perspective [Mar. 4th, 2005|02:07 pm]
After being abroad for almost 2 years, being back in India you look at things the way a foreigner would.
Many things I see shock me, disappoint me, irritate me, anger me and make me shake my head in resignation.

Traffic: This might seem like its coming a little late but people in Bangalore and in most other parts of India have just no traffic sense. Every second on the road is a bloody nightmare. Bangalore especially is rock bottom. Why can't we just follow the goddamn rules?!

Civic Sense: Another typically Indian failing. Regardless of where we are and who we are, us great Indians will never hesitate to lean out of the car and spit or regurgitate something we had for lunch, never hesitate to nonchalantly flick that still-lit cigarette out the car window not caring on whom it lands and of course not give much of a damn about littering all over the place.

The most common excuse we find is "people aren't educated" To that I sigh in resignation...sadly most of them are educated. They DO know what they are doing is wrong but yet go ahead and do it anyway...like little erring children. This is the part that frustrates me...and what frustrates me the most is the attitude of my fellow countrymen..even many friends..."grin and bear it"..or "this is India"....or "welcome back". If a change has to be brought about, the attitude needs to change first...but how? How does one make people get out of this sea of apathy and acceptance?

And to think our Media and leaders talk of a developed India in 20 years. I will not scoff at it as I think its a noble idea but I am cynically militant about it actually happening..or for that matter..anything close to it actually happening.

I want to change things but don't know how. Should I be content by just doing my bit, living my life and lump it? Or should I do something else?

I dont know the answers...but there sure are a lot of questions. What I am most scared about is I too will soon sink into this sea of apathy that many of my friends are in and will soon not even care to bat an eyelid when someone gracefully leans out their car window to deposit some of their phlegm on the road below.

Slipping into routines... [Mar. 4th, 2005|01:58 pm]
[Current Mood | blank]

The resilience and adaptability of man is incredible. A month back...just 30 days back I was in China leading the most organized, disciplined life I have ever led....and suddenly I'm in India...chaos, noise, dust, dirt, friends, family and every other imaginable kind of distraction meant to occupy every single cell in your brain and engage every little bit of space your senses can spare.

I land in Bangalore and within 3 days, I'm at my new job. A week later, I'm in the routine once again! No issues, no culture shock ( not enough to matter), no complaints (other than some initial re-settlement issues and one other major issue which I shall elaborate later)

This has been my week day for the last 2 weeks now...amazing:

6:00 AM : Wake up and go for a run around Sankey Lake ( which btw is simply beautiful now with the new jogging track....a real treat)

7:30-8:30: Return from exercise, catch morning dose of CNBC and newspaper

8:45: head to work...fight my way through the insanity that are roads in Bangalore

9:15 - 9:30: reach office, work, meetings etc.

7:15 -7:30: head back home for dinner or meet friends to be back home by 10. Chat with folks about the day and sleep

Every week day. Its amazing how we can slip into or back into something so easily.

Omega 3 [Mar. 4th, 2005|01:43 pm]
[Current Mood | blank]

Just because I haven't posted about the South beach diet in a while doesn't mean I am off it and resting on my laurels. Its because the diet has now become to me, what the good man who invented it wants it to be for everyone: a lifestyle change and not just a diet.
Although now that I am back in India I lead a much more cluttered life surrounded by friends and family all of whom are constantly amazed by what I dont eat and what I do eat...honestly I dont feel the difference.

Its quite hard for most people to understand the logic behind the "diet" ( cuz I dont believe its a diet I'm on...I just don't eat junk!) but I'm ok with their puzzled and often incredulous looks 'long as I'm left to eat what I want.

Anyhooo...Omega 3. Omega 3 is one of the essential fats the body needs and I decided to do a little research on whether Cod liver oil is actually beneficial or not. Turns out, as with most things on the 'net, there are contradictory opinions. So I'm going to continue popping my capsule of cod oil a day and smile.

Of old friends, new acquaintances and sports [Feb. 28th, 2005|06:21 pm]
[Current Mood | rejuvenated]
[Current Music |If you go on - Matchbox 20]

I've finally decided to sit down late in the office and put things down that have happened and things that i've done in the last 2 weeks. Its been an incredible whirlwind of work, meeting old friends, meeting some new people, meeting some people who i used to watch on TV all the time and working in sports. Add all these elements together and you get one helluva roller coaster.

  • To summarize work, I am working on: a proposal to bring down one of the world's biggest tennis events to India, sell one of India's cricketers as a brand ambassador to various companies, work on concepts and ideas around adventure sports for a clothing company, come up with creative ideas for a jewellery chain to leverage entertainment as a platform to drive sales and convince a company that bringing together 2 of the most colourful characters in cricket today for a chat show is a fantastic idea...phew! :-) It all seems a bit unreal right now but I guess once I make my first sale or organize my first event, it should sink in....."-)
  • I met up with Ash and Aiyaps on Sunday afternoon. It was great to go back to college and meet a couple of old lecturers followed by a lunch at a fancy restaurant (Bangalore Bistro...one of the increasing signs of Bangalore becoming chic)
  • Sunday evening was the most fun in a long time...unexpectedly so! Met with 3 classmates from school (hooli, DV and Kou) and what followed was a rollicking time full of memories, crazy driving, loud music and more boisterous behaviour! ha ha!
  • Saturday, the entire day was spent at Eagleton golf resort where my company had organized a corporate golf event. It was great to be at my first such event and to see that AIESEC has taught me pretty much all I need to know when it comes to organizing events on any scale
  • As far as the week and work, its been complete deja vu. Making sales calls, doing sales calls with tight fisted marketing heads, being blown away by secretaries, doing kick ass meetings with Blah and learning the ropes...a complete sense of deja vu. VP TN days more than ever.
  • The highlight of the last 2 weeks was a meeting with the former India quick bowler Javagal Srinath and looking at what he's been doing in life and how we could work with him He simply blew me away with his intellect and grasp of corporate reality
  • Bangalore has become immensely crowded and polluted but you can't help loving the city: great weather, great places to eat and drink, incredibly pretty women and Mark Knopfler coming down next Monday..what more do you want in a city!?? Chic, modern and eclectic..Bangalore still Rox!

Thank you Geet Sethi....success is immaterial.....

Joy is what counts. Joy is what matters.

That's it for now.

Twister [Feb. 24th, 2005|06:33 pm]
[Current Mood | tired]
[Current Music |everybody must get stoned - Bob Dylan]

Ever since I got back to Bangalore and started work, it seems like I've been caught in a twister...throwing me around from work to friends to parties to dinners! I guess like Nirish said, I should enjoy the initial euphoria ha ha ;-)

I've been meaning to post a long update on all that has happened since I came back but just cant seem to find the time and when I do find the time (like right now) I am so dang tired that its tough to squeeze out coherent thoughts and be articulate.
Saturday would be a golf event at Eagleton followed by lunch and a wild party in the night. Sunday afteroon looks like meeting Ash and Sunday night meeting DV and Hooli (Holli after 6 years!)
Packed weekend!

First day at Globo [Feb. 18th, 2005|03:35 pm]
My first day at Globo yesterday. Fun, Chaotic and Fast paced - just as I'd hoped. Of course, sitting in Mahesh's E class & going for 2 meetings was an unexpected, albeit wholly pleasant surprise.
Second day today. Busy again. Maybe more thoughts on the weekend.

Live from Mulund! [Feb. 11th, 2005|01:39 pm]

[Current Music |Spirits in a material word - Police]

If I were to pick one place other than Malleswaram (bangalore) i would want to live in, it would have to be Mulund. :-)
Its soooo good to be back here with family and now to my delight, multiplexes, malls, skimpily clad college girls roaming the malls he he, and of course great food.
Needless to say, the favourite topic of conversation is my new look and people are generally shocked/happy on seeing me.
Went to Starters y'day with Sam...was good to be back there and also went for the Challenger game last night..pretty disappointed. This morning was a Pepsi commercial shoot and Sam wanted me to come along to take Zaheer to the shoot where the whole of Team India along with the Big B would be shooting...but didnt wake up on time so missed it. Ah well...now this is my life...mingling with the high flying page 3 crowd...should be fun....although the glamour aspect doesn't touch me at all....hmmm.

Still reeling from the awesome experience that was the Sting concert.
Did some great shopping y'day with Honey didi and today some more for my new look.
More later!

Delhi, Sting and good times [Feb. 7th, 2005|11:54 am]
[Current Mood | calm]

Its been 3 days now in Delhi and I am sitting at Blah's desk here at serve n volley after a completely magical experience last night. We saw Sting perform from 15 feet away. We were right up against the railing of the stage.
Incredible.
Delhi so far has been a lot of fun. All that I expected. Perfect.
More later...maybe from Mumbai.
